We Need a Methane Target and National Methane Action Plan

Methane emissions are a major threat to Australia’s ability to meet its emissions reduction targets. Without immediate action, methane from coal and gas is expected to account for as much as 95% of Australia’s targeted emissions by 2035. In states like New South Wales, it could contribute up to 78%, and it is projected to surpass Queensland’s targets entirely. This makes tackling methane emissions critical to Australia’s climate goals.

The Solution: Abating Fossil Fuel Methane Emissions

Australia has the tools to address this challenge. Using readily available technologies, we could cut two-thirds of methane emissions from fossil fuels. The cost? About A$1 per tonne of coal in coalmining – a minimal expense compared to the potential benefits. In the gas sector, capturing methane would actually generate financial gains, as companies could sell the recovered methane.

Current Policies Are Falling Short

Current policies are failing to reduce methane emissions effectively. Key issues include:

  • Inadequate Measurement: Methane emissions are not being tracked accurately.
  • Weak Financial Incentives: Companies lack the motivation to take action.
  • Flaws in the Safeguard Mechanism: The settings are not strong enough to drive meaningful change.

Governments Must Step Up

Federal and state governments must act urgently. Here’s what needs to happen:

  1. Set a Methane Target: A clear target will drive focus and accountability.
  2. Implement a National Methane Action Plan: This plan should prioritise:
    • Enhancing financial incentives for companies.
    • Requiring best-practice methane abatement measures.
    • Strengthening regulations to ensure compliance.

Why Act Now?

Every tonne of methane reduced brings us closer to our climate goals, protects public health, and supports a sustainable future. The solutions are here, the cost is low, and the time to act is now.
